If your ears feel clogged, there may be things you can try to unclog them. It depends on what is causing the clogged sensation.
If your ears are plugged with wax, then removal is the solution. If the wax is not impacted, you might be able to use an over-the-counter kit to flush your ears out. This usually involves softening the wax with an oily solution for a few days and then using the bulb to flush the ear. No NOT use a cotton swab, bobby pin, or any other device in your ear. You are more likely to push the wax further down the ear canal than you are to get it out. Do not do this if you have a history of tympanic membrane perforation (hole in eardrum). If this does not work, then a visit to your primary care physician or ear, nose, and throat physician would be in order. Audiologists can perform cerumen removal, but unfortunately the insurance companies will only pay for a physician to remove.
If the clogged feeling is coming from sinus or allergies issues (from your eustachian tubes), you might try the Valsalva Maneuver. Close your mouth, pinch your nose, and gently try to blow air out to pop the ears. Sometimes yawning, swallowing, or chewing gum might open the tubes. Using saline sinus rinses and over the counter nasal sprays may also help open the eustachian tubes. These methods may also help if you feel clogged after flying.
If you are experiencing ear pain, hearing loss, or persistent congestion with the clogged feeling, see your physician.
