Gardner Audiology Celebrates Better Speech and Hearing Month

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month! It’s a month where we remind everyone of the importance of their hearing, steps to take if hearing deficits are noticed and offer solutions. While we at Gardner Audiology are always doing our best to make our communities aware of the importance of hearing, May is a month to ramp it up.

Things to consider:

  • 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss by 2050 and over 1 billion young adults are at risk of permanent and avoidable hearing loss.
  • One in three people over the age of 60 have hearing loss, and one in two people older than 85 have hearing loss.
  • People with untreated hearing loss often experience a decreased quality of life, and a higher incidence of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline and poor social relationships.
  • Hearing loss due to aging (most common) can be increased by other factors such as diabetes, poor circulation, noise exposure and certain medications.
  • Mild hearing loss is still a hearing loss!

How to recognize a possible hearing loss:

  • Having difficulty hearing your soft-spoken spouse or friend
  • Difficulty hearing children’s voices (think grandchildren)
  • Difficulty understanding in background noise (restaurants/parties)
  • Needing repetition
  • Complaining everyone mumbles

What you can do:

  • Get your hearing tested annually. Most insurances, including Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans, will cover a hearing test once a year.
  • If a hearing loss is found, be proactive!
  • Current hearing aids are digital microprocessors (a mini-computer!) that can automatically adjust to sounds, a thousand times per second, making speech more comfortable and natural sounding.
  • Hearing aid technology is constantly evolving
  • Hearing aids can improve communication with family, friends, co-workers helping to maintain a high quality of life.
  • Many Medicaid Advantage plans and some private insurance carriers offer discounted pricing or benefits. USE THEM!
  • Gardner Audiology offers options at all price points for those without insurance coverage, including a free one-week loan of the device of your choosing.
  • Wear hearing protection when using firearms, lawn care equipment or any other environment deemed “loud”.

Research has shown that the “use it or lose it” principle applies to hearing loss as well. Untreated hearing loss can lead to deteriorated speech understanding over time.

Treating hearing loss early, even a “mild hearing loss”, is highly recommended!
