Tips For Good Hearing Health

Did you know there are things you can do to help preserve your ability to hear? There are many things that cause hearing loss, and some of them you have control over. Everyone should have a baseline hearing evaluation, just like we do with our vision. That will allow us to monitor hearing over the years. Now let’s review what you can do to help your hearing. 

  1. Stop smoking! Smoking cigarettes causes problems with circulation and increases risk of hearing loss. The cochlea/organ of hearing needs blood flow and oxygen to keep the inner ear cells healthy. Luckily, once you quit smoking your body goes into a repair mode and may reverse some of the flow issues. 
  2. NO LOUD NOISE! I see patients daily who worked in noisy settings their whole life. Because of this, they think the damage is done and it is too late to use ear protection. Noise induced hearing loss is a continual process and as long as you are around loud noise you are at risk of more hearing loss. This includes lawn mowers, weed wackers, edgers, skill saws, gunfire, and more. Also, keep the volume down if you use earbuds.  
  3. Exercise Daily. Exercise gets your blood flowing and improves circulation. See #1 regarding hearing and blood flow and circulation! 
  4. Have your ears checked for wax, but do not use cotton swabs. Cotton swabs can push wax further in the ear and can also cause trauma to the ear canal and eardrum. Nothing smaller than your elbow in your ear! 
  5. Keep up on immunizations. Some illnesses, such as measles, mumps, whooping cough and bacterial infections, can cause hearing loss. 
  6. If you have a sudden hearing loss, time is of the essence. The sooner a sudden hearing loss is treated, the better the chance of recovery.
