If you’ve ever called to make an appointment at any of our locations to request a volume increase on your hearing aids, you may have been told we recommend a service visit first before we make any volume adjustments, especially if we have not seen you in more than 3 months.
Why?
There are many reasons why you feel you need the volume boost that can be solved without any additional programming or costs! More than 85% of the time, the lack of desired volume is a quick fix that can be solved in our 15-minute length of service appointments.
The first thing the Audiology Assistant will do at your hearing aid service visit appointment is take a look in your ears to make sure there isn’t any wax that could be disrupting your sound quality. Wax can accumulate very slowly over time, so it can be very difficult to tell how much you have and if it has started to interfere with the quality of your hearing aids. The next thing they will do is service your hearing aids in our lab. This service includes: changing microphone covers/vacuuming out your microphones, changing your wax filters, changing your domes, changing any earmold tubing if applicable, and sometimes our Audiology Assistants discover parts of the hearing aids are just not functioning properly and are able to provide an onsite repair. They will then conduct a listening check of the hearing aid, to determine its overall quality and performance, and to determine if a true volume adjustment is needed and then discuss with you any next steps.
There is a lot of care and thought that goes into the initial service visit before we agree to do any adjustments, and it’s not because we do not believe you aren’t hearing well from the hearing aid, we just want to make sure the hearing aid is working properly first. If we were to skip this step, unneeded volume increases can lead to feedback and overall discomfort from your devices.
