A muffled hearing sensation can be caused by a multitude of things. Also, you may have other accompanying symptoms along with it such as fullness/pressure in the ear, ringing, drainage, pain, etc. Understanding the causes of muffled hearing is very important. So, what exactly can cause it to be muffled?
General causes:
- Wax build-up
- Cold and/or flu
- Swimmer’s ear
- Allergies
- Sinus infections
- Travel (air pressure changes like in airplanes, high elevation, etc.)
More serious causes include:
- Ear infections
- Hearing loss (aging, noise-induced, etc.)
- Certain medications
- Meniere’s Disease
You may be asking yourself, is there a cure for muffled hearing? That answer can be yes and no. Depending on what caused your muffled hearing is going to determine if that issue can be resolved. For example, if your provider looks in your ears and finds a blockage of wax and it can be removed, this may resolve the muffled hearing almost immediately. But, in other cases, if you have a hearing test completed that finds you have sensorineural hearing loss, then it can’t be cured, but it can be managed with hearing aids.
