When someone gets hearing aids, that’s an exciting step toward them hearing more clearly and staying connected to the people and sounds around them. But if you’ve recently started wearing hearing aids and thought, “This doesn’t sound the way I expected,” you’re not alone.
For many people, hearing aids take some getting used to. That doesn’t necessarily mean your hearing aids aren’t working properly. In fact, your brain may simply need time to adjust to hearing sounds it hasn’t heard clearly in a long time.
When you have hearing loss, your brain gradually adapts to receiving less sound information, often without you realizing it. Once hearing aids begin restoring those sounds, everyday noises can suddenly seem much louder or more noticeable. You may hear the refrigeration running, the air conditioner turning on, dishes clanking, your own footsteps, or even your own voice differently.
These sounds may seem strange at first because your brain isn’t accustomed to processing them at their normal levels anymore.
What I like to tell my patient is to think of it like walking into a room after the lights have been dim for a long time. When the lights suddenly come on, everything may initially seem too bright. Over time, your eyes adjust. Hearing works in a similar way.
One of the most common expectations patients have is that hearing aids should immediately make everything sound exactly like it did before their hearing loss. Unfortunately, hearing aids can’t completely recreate normal hearing. They are sophisticated devices designed to make speech and other important sounds more accessible while working within the limitations of your individual hearing loss.
This is why follow-up appointments are important. Getting hearing aids isn’t a “one-and-done” experience. Your hearing aids are programmed based on your hearing test, but your real-world experience is equally important. During follow-up appointments, your provider can make adjustments based on what you’re experiencing.
If your new hearing aids don’t sound completely natural on day one, don’t assume you’ve made the wrong choice or that hearing aids aren’t for you. For many people, better hearing is a process rather than an overnight transformation. With consistent use, professional guidance, and appropriate adjustments, your hearing aids can become a natural part of your everyday life.
