In the last few weeks, I have been repeatedly questioned about Over-The-Counter (OTC) hearing aids by my patients. Often these questions are asked while I am prescription fitting their new hearing aids. We have a process for fitting and verifying proper settings on the hearing aids we fit. We utilize Real Ear Speech Mapping to ensure that the frequency response of the hearing aids is adjusted properly to the person’s hearing loss. This is a very unique and individual process. Properly adjusted hearing aids will set you up for success. Improperly adjusted hearing aids are a recipe for failure. I have seen this often over the years. Patients come to me very unhappy with their hearing aids and they were not adjusted properly. We make the necessary changes and it is a whole different ball game!
One of my concerns with OTC hearing aids is that we will not be able to adjust them for you. Typically, if you purchase hearing aids from one of the big six worldwide manufacturers, we have the ability to adjust those devices. On the other hand, if you purchase hearing aids from Beltone, Miracle Ear, Audibel, or Costco (Kirkland brand), the computer chip is “locked” and no one other than that brand store is able to adjust the hearing aids.
Important facts to know: Hearing aids come in all shapes and sizes, in many levels of technology, and in a wide range of prices.
