It is not uncommon to hear a crackling sound in your ear at one point in time in life for many people. For some people the crackling will occur persistently for several days to weeks prior to seek medical treatment, for others they may notice their ear crackles and then opens up, and they hear better for a time before the crackling and clogged sensation begins again.
So, what causes this? Typically, the culprit is a significant amount of ear wax! This can occur in one ear, both ears, early in life, or even later in life! Ear wax production in and of itself is not a bad thing, as ear wax is a moisturizer for the skin in the ear canal and has antifungal and antibacterial properties. But too much ear wax can start to cause the crackling sound as well as significant difficulty hearing.
Ear wax removal can be performed by Audiologists (in specific states) as well as medical doctors, such as your Primary Care Physician, Urgent Care Physician, or Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist. In the state of Florida, Audiologists are unable to bill your insurance for ear cleaning and therefore it is a private pay cost. However, all physicians (the title of Medical Doctor) can bill your insurance for this service.
