What Are “Normal” Hearing Test Results?

Completing a baseline hearing test is the best thing you can do to be proactive about your hearing health regardless of any hearing difficulties. An Audiologist performs the test using an audiometer while the patient is in a calibrated booth. After completing a comprehensive audiometric evaluation, the Audiologist will explain the test results.

Hearing results are depicted on an audiogram. An audiogram is a graph that shows how well a patient can hear sounds at different intensities and frequencies. The x-axis represents frequencies (Hz) that range from low (250 Hz) to high (8,000 Hz). The y-axis represents the intensity (dB) of how loud it needs to be for you to hear the sound. The right ear is shown on the graph as “O” and the left ear as “X”. Normal hearing is within 20 dB and above. It is important to note that the intensity is not a percent of hearing loss.
