Do hearing aids make your hearing worse? The short simple answer to this is no. Prescription hearing aids are programmed based off your hearing loss. Hearing aids have a maximum power output (MPO). MPO is the loudest sound level a hearing aid can produce. It sets a safety limit to prevent sounds from becoming uncomfortably or dangerously loud for a patient.
Hearing aids help your brain stay active by providing constant sound input which in turn can help preserve your hearing abilities over time. Some people tend to worry about loud settings and environments, but when hearing aids are programmed by an Audiologist, they won’t cause further hearing damage. However, it is important to note that there are some settings such as a gun shooting range, where taking the hearing aids out and using ear protection instead is recommended.
