Why is There No Cure for Tinnitus?

It is estimated 32% of the US population has tinnitus, also known as ringing in the ears.  It is a common reason why patients come to see the Audiology Doctors at Gardner Audiology.  Unfortunately, as many have discovered, there is currently no cure for tinnitus.  Given that it is such a widespread problem, patients often wonder why there is no medical cure for the noises they hear in their ears.

Tinnitus is not a disease, but rather a symptom of a disease.  Tinnitus can be caused by hearing loss, noise exposure, ear infections, medications and ear wax to name a few.  Sometimes a practitioner can diagnose the root of the problem (such as ear wax or medications) and the tinnitus may be resolved!  Sometimes the doctor may not be able to find what is causing your tinnitus, and therefore it can’t be cured.

What are your options if that is the case?  Gardner Audiology in South Pasadena, Florida can test your hearing and evaluate your tinnitus to see if treatment options are available to help alleviate the ringing in your ears.  If you have hearing loss, sometimes hearing aids alone can help minimize the ringing in your ears!  If not, sound therapy can also be used to lower the perception of the tinnitus.

It is important to be evaluated by a Doctor of Audiology for your tinnitus and to speak to your medical doctor about the ringing in your ears.  To schedule an evaluation at Gardner Audiology, please contact 800-277-1182 or info@gardneraudiology.com
