If your medical doctor cannot cure your tinnitus (noises in your ear) the best treatment is hearing aids. Typically, by re-introducing sounds to your brain that it’s been missing for a while, you will notice some relief from your tinnitus. This concept is similar to phantom limb – when a limb is missing, your brain can still send signals that may cause you to feel pain in that area; similarly, if you have hearing loss, your brain may be trying to still send signals within that range, resulting in your tinnitus.
Of course, if you have hearing loss, hearing aids will help you understand people better. But, they also offer a tinnitus masker to help distract from your tinnitus. Historically, tinnitus patients have loved this feature of hearing aids. By creating a second setting, patients can turn the masker on and off as needed!
Several patients also have found tinnitus relief by decreasing their intake of alcohol, caffeine, and sodium. These things have all been shown to exacerbate tinnitus.
