One of the smallest hearing aids available on the market is Phonak’s Virto M-Titanium Invisible-in-the-Canal (IIC) hearing aid. IIC hearing aids are designed to sit deep within your ear canal, close to the ear drum. This provides one of the most cosmetically discreet profiles, and also helps to prevent some of the potential limitations of completely in-the-ear hearing aids.
Depending on your hearing loss, plugging up your ear completely with an in-the-ear hearing aid can negatively impact sound quality, such as hearing your own voice too much, chewing, and other internal sounds. Due to the depth of an IIC, it can help minimize some of these potential problems. Also, Phonak is the only manufacturer to use Titanium to build the hearing aid, which provides sound quality benefits as well as durability!
Despite their cosmetic advantages, IICs do have some limitations:
- The size of the device is dependent on your ear canal and not all patients will be good IIC candidates.
- The small size requires good dexterity, as cleaning and changing the batteries can be difficult. They may require more frequent in-office maintenance.
- They do not offer phone compatibility.
