Some patients come into our clinics for an appointment with a preference for a hearing aid that only goes inside the ear. While this is not always recommended, based on the patient’s ear canal shape, hearing loss levels, or because the patient wants specific features or a specific manufacturer, in-the-ear hearing aid options continue to expand in functionality. The most recent development on the scene of in-the-ear hearing aids is called the Oticon Zeal. The Oticon Zeal was launched in the United States earlier this year, January 2026, but has been being used in other areas of the world for several months.
As it is so new, our providers here at Gardner Audiology have not fit this device so far, but we sure have heard a lot about it from the manufacturer. The Oticon Zeal is described as one of the first non-custom (one small size fits all) in the ear hearing aids to be rechargeable AND offer Bluetooth connectivity to select phones. This device has a dome on the end like the behind the ear hearing aid models. This reduces shipping and development time to get you hearing better faster. This also allows us to make adjustments to the fit/feel of the hearing aid in the office as opposed to sending out a completely custom hearing aid for remake.
The Oticon Zeal includes the latest Oticon Intent technology allowing you better sound quality and access to communication in your environment. As of now, it is only offered in premium tiers of technology.
Now some may ask what the silver cord on the end does, that is the Bluetooth antenna for connectivity to your phone for phone calls or use of the Oticon app. It also is designed to help hold the hearing aid in the ear, acting as the retention line too. This piece cannot be trimmed or adjusted in office without significant effect on the connectivity and fit, so that may limit which patient uses this device based on comfort and size of the outer ear canal anatomy.
This new product is another step towards increasing access to various styles of hearing aids while not compromising Bluetooth compatibility and rechargeability. Here at Gardner Audiology, we strive to offer you the best in hearing health care at the best price available to you via any available insurance benefits. At this time, I have not seen the Zeal offered through the 3rd party insurance groups, but I’m sure in the future this will be an option available through insurance as well, not just private pay.
