I am often asked if insurance pays for hearing aids. There is no short answer to this question. Medicare does NOT cover hearing aids. Some Medicare Advantage plans have a dollar amount benefit towards hearing aids, while others offer a “discount” on hearing aids. Be very wary of the discount pricing because often times they mark up the “List Price” of the hearing aids before discounting.
Some people have hearing aid benefits through their retirement. For instance, United Auto Workers and Federal Employees Plan have good benefits towards hearing aids. These benefits are provided by the retirement plan, often from a Union, and then are administered through an insurance company or third party. Some insurance plans actually EXCLUDE hearing benefits from their policies.
We are starting a new year and will be hearing from the different insurance companies and the third parties who administer their benefits soon. In the next couple of weeks, we will have a better understanding of the 2023 benefits available.
